David works with leaders who are engaged in transitions to new roles, new scope or improved results. An expert facilitator, trainer and coach, he has worked for twenty years with government, manufacturing, healthcare, law enforcement, technology and financial institutions. David’s recent work includes facilitating the national leadership of a federal law enforcement agency, coaching credit union CEOs through mergers, supporting the rebuilding of a manufacturing leadership team and working with a nationally recognized hospital as it goes through significant leadership transition.
To challenge their thinking and push them ahead, David asks clients the right questions at the right time. He supports organizations through strategic planning and helps them overcome roadblocks using a framework of values-based commitment and stakeholder mapping.
Originally from Leeds, England, David is a former Scotland Yard police officer. He is a graduate of Hendon Police Academy in London and an honors graduate of Lancaster University’s education program. He earned a master’s degree in organizational management and is a Senior Fellow at the University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy. David has twice delivered at the International Leadership Association conference. He is co-author of 50 DOs for Everyday Leadership: Lessons Learned the Hard Way (So You Don’t Have To), now in its second edition.
In his spare time, David plays soccer and the guitar, both badly, in his opinion. He lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan with Launda and whichever of their four children happen by. David and Launda spend free time exploring nature as they hike near their home. They recently completed an Atlantic crossing on a 39-foot sailboat, with the help of two fellow sailors, and look forward to more adventures at sea.
David's Satisfied Clients
David’s great insight to effective leadership skills has played a key role for me personally and for the entire organization. He has been able to break down effective leadership into ‘bite size’ portions, discuss them in a real-life context, assist with daily implementation and measure results.
I worked hand-in-hand with David Wheatley and Humanergy in developing and conducting an innovative orientation and initial training program for new presidential-appointed United States Marshals – most had no previous USMS or federal work experience. David’s energy and style were simply brilliant! Based on student interviews and critiques, this was the most successful training I had witnessed in over 34 years of USMS service. David and Humanergy redefined the word excellence.
This is not the type of training where you leave the session and put the book away. The training is immediately applicable to work and personal life situations.
