Have you ever thought about your speaking-to-listening ratio?
What is it?
What would others say it was?
What should it be in your role?
A number of years ago I asked these questions in a coaching session to a wonderful leader with great potential. His challenge was his need to speak. We discussed the above questions and came to the conclusion that his quality was being diluted by his quantity. For his wisdom and ideas to be heard, it was important to reduce the talking ratio.
This didn’t mean just shutting up! He needed to discern the quality vs. the quantity and adjust his ratio so people heard the quality. It is an insight he still talks about today.
Reflect on the four questions at the top of this note and tune in to your ratio.
